Sacramental Preparation

                                                First Eucharist

 “Initiated into the Christian mystery by Baptism and Confirmation, Christians are fully joined to the Body of Christ in the Eucharist” (National Catechetical Directory, #120)

Readiness for First Communion:

  • Baptized and at the age of reason (about age 7)
  • Desire to receive the sacrament
  • Formed in their faith in an age appropriate manner
  • Commitment to continue in their formation and participation in the life of the faith community
  • Can distinguish Eucharist from ordinary bread

Preparation for First Communion:

  • Separate form Catholic School and parish faith formation classes
  • Preparation should take no more than three months.
  • Purpose is to prepare the children to participate in the Mass in a meaningful, reverent manner.

Restored Order

Children preparing for the sacrament of First Communion will also be prepared to receive Confirmation. Areas covered in the classes will be Jesus, Baptism, belonging to community, Gifts of the Spirit, Confirmation (symbols of oil and water), and Eucharist. At the end of the preparation program the children will join together in a community Confirmation celebration at which time they will be confirmed and receive their First Communion. Confirmation is celebrated in the spring at either a Blessed Trinity Worship Site or at St. Patrick Church.
